Acorns

The neighborhood surrounding our little abode is known as Oak Hill. Naturally, with the exception of a few white pines I planted, it's mainly large mature oak trees. The oaks consist of white, burr and a few reds. They shade and shelter us. On occasion they draw lightening bolts. Overall I love their strength and beauty. Except....

Except for one little thing. Acorns. It's been  a super year for acorns. A few years ago  a friend asked for a few acorns to plant. Zip. I couldn't find a one .... It seems oaks usually produce some seeds most years and occasionally a super abundance or the year when there were none at all here in the upper Midwest.

This year.... well take a look at my deck. Every day for a week now it has looked liked this.

And every day Mrs. T. sweeps it clean. No walking in the back yard with bare feet. Ouch! Was I happy about this situation? No way. Was anybody happy about this situation? I guess so!

Something tells me all the critters here on Oak Hill will be well fed with acorns this winter....:)

  4. Hi TB - I didn't realise about the prolific or dearth year for acorns ... they are nobbly to walk on - that I'd agree with. They look well fed - any boars? Cheers Hilary

  5. It's called Oak Hill and there are oak trees there. That's quite a coincidence. That happens once in awhile. When I got to New Mexico I found out the Santa Fe trail actually goes to Santa Fe. What are the odds?

At least you don't live on Watermelon Hill. Imagine what your deck would look like.

Seriously though, how nice to live in a place that has a name. Roosevelts and Kennedys live in places that have names. Springwood. Hyannis Port. And to have all those magnificent trees around you. It sounds like a beautiful place.

And please, give the missus a hand sweeping. You never know. She might help you with the dishes.

  6. I have a young oak in my garden. I think it will be many years before I see acorns. I wonder if the squirrels will enjoy them.

  8. I have another friend who says she hears the acorns fall on their roof all the time these days. A bumper crop this year, I guess! :-)

  9. I have slid on these before. It seems a good year all around for them. The state used to buy them by the bushel

  10. Yes there will be some happy deer and squirrels. I kind of miss the sound of them dropping on my roof like they did in Fl. Maybe you need to rent a goat or maybe a dozen.

  11. Wow, that is a good crop of nuts on your deck! The squirrels must be going "nuts" trying to bury them all.

  12. Nature has a way of "over-doing" it some years with things, but I'm sure your neighborhood critters appreciate the bounty.
I had the problem of too many maple seeds (helicopters) last year. I was digging millions of them out of my flower beds. If I ever quit gardening, there's going to be a forest here in no time at all!
Hope all is well with you two. Happy Fall
( I can say that now, it's 37 degrees here!)

  13. Good to see such a good harvest for the animals and birds. in the UK we usuall put a good harvest down to the fact that we had good Spring free of frosts, giving the buds a chance to set.
    All the best, Gordon.
