Moms Cactus

I'm sure many gardeners have a special plant or two which conveys meaning and fond memories. One of those plants for me are the descendents of a cactus my mom gave me  many years ago. She brought it from Arizona where a winter retreat helped her deal with her asthma. I have no idea what it is named  but remember fondly from whom and whence it came. Offshoots have been given away but I always keep a few to sit in the sunny spot in front of  our small front porch and next to the  tiny fish pond. The blooms open for one night only so I wait patiently for them to appear.  And think of her....
P.S.  After several emails concerning my lack of recent posts suggesting perhaps ill health, I can report Excellent results  on my recent anual physical. Finding a girlfriend in the Twin Cities area also added to my positivity and energy. 😂💗

  8. It is a Echinopsis arebaloi, native to South America. There are many cacti that fall into the same family. You can see it on this website:

  9. What a great way to remember someone. I had a peony offshoot of my moms--and stupidly left it behind when we moved 5 years ago. When we got settled in, I went to ask the new owners for a cutting....and they had dug it up and thrown it away.
    Your cactus blooms are lovely.

  10. It really puts out great flowers. I have a cactus that does not bloom but I baby it all year and bring it in during the winter so it doesn't have to die down and revive again like the outside cactus do.

  18. I love to see a cactus, especially one with a flower. But what is it about a cactus that makes me have to touch it?

    I wish I wouldn't do that.

  19. How very nice. Cactus blooms are so special in that it takes so long for a cactus to reach blooming age and then, as you say, the blossom only last day or so. A lovely way to honour your mom.

I have a potted hibiscus of my mother's that I treasure. It is blooming now.

  21. Beautiful blooms on that cactus plant... I can imagine why that plant is so special to you... Love it!!!

We love it when our Sempervivum (Chicks and Hens) bloom... Their blooms are always so pretty--and a surprise when they do bloom.

    Have a great day.

  23. I have an African Violet I gave my MIL when we moved her here into a retirement complex. When she passed, I knew I'd take it home and smile as I watched it bloom year after year. Seven years she's been gone and it blooms on.

  27. I love having flowers and plants from friends and relatives that remind me of them every time I look at them, such as my great grandma’s Christmas cactus. Your cactus blooms are very pretty. And I think it’s very lovely that you have a lady friend in the big city to enjoy life with! Glad your annual physical finds you in good health.
