Imagine my total and complete surprise when a picture I had submitted over a year ago turned up in the most recent issue. I was dumbfounded.
As you can see an Eastern Screech Owl is peering out of a woodduck house, one of my sons built for me many years ago. It is fastened to an oak tree in our backyard. Screech owls are not very common around here much less hanging around in a house built for ducks! He was most frequently seen on the coldest mornings facing east toward the morning sun.
Congratulations! Patience is the key here.

ReplyDeleteHopefully you swelled right up with pride mister. That's wonderful...I have not seen a screech owl around here in years either. Barred owls rule in my neck of the woods...and eat guineas occasionally.

ReplyDeleteMy Dad had a screech owl take over his woodduck box the third year. It lived there a long time, probably more than 5-years. It got quite used to him working outside and in the evening would fly over his head and click it's beak. My Dad took that for a signal that the owl wanted him gone so it could hunt;)

ReplyDeleteEvery so often I'll hear a screech owl when I'm out deer hunting north of SV. I wonder if their numbers are declining also?
