A Good Nose

It was early in March
Baron the GSD & I
were following a snowmobile trail
thru the woods.
He stopped nose to the ground like my hunting dogs used to do.
The he followed a scent or some movement.

He was tracking something under the snow.
GSD's are famous as "sniffer dogs." Rooting out explosives, illicit drugs etc.
Today, we went for a "birding" hike in Lake Louise State Park. He tracked and flushed a pheasant, and then a huge turkey out of the slough. Hmmm. Maybe I should take up hunting for upland game again? Nah!

  2. These are fantastic dogs and excellent trackers. Our police service uses them all the time for some of the things you mentioned.

  8. Can't believe how much snow you still have. At least you and Baron aren't letting the weather keep you cooped up inside. It's interesting to think of the world of scent that dogs are familiar with but we know nothing about. If our noses were that sensitive we would know things like coyotes were laying just a hundred yards away in a hollow area. We humans miss out on a lot.

  11. I used to have German Shepherds and now have a standard poodle and a labradoodle. The face in the snow posture my sister and I call "bunny face." It makes them blind and deaf to all commands. Here in my neck of the woods we see a lot of bunny face as the voles begin to stir under the snow.
