The Alaska Highway travels through some the most beautiful and pristine landscapes in North America. It's size and beauty largely defies description. There are forest and mountain vistas, wild animals, 424 species of birds, wildflowers, mighty rivers and small streams. You name it. Come on along a take a look circa June 2000.
We headed up the highway confident we could meet any challenges. I had stashed my 12 gauge shotgun (with slugs) in the camper in case of marauding killer grizzlies. Seriously... to pacify Mrs. T. A teaching colleague had grown up in Seward told me the only bears he had seen were in the Anchorage zoo. who This precaution, of course, was before real terrorists attacked the Homeland. The road was smooth and well graded. Until somewhere between Fort St. John and Ft. Nelson when we hit a 35 mile section of serious road construction. Oops

We camped that night on the shores of Lake Teslin, Yukon Territory. Just one of many very nice campgrounds we enjoyed. The lake, tucked between two mountain ranges, is more than 30 miles long.

like the road construction area - looks like a sand dune!
ReplyDeleteMy husband has been watching the reality show about gold mining in Alaska. The road construction project looks very much like the wasteland the gold miners leave behind. Love going back on your trip.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be good! I'm already enjoying your trip, and we're only two days in. :-)
ReplyDeleteLoved the last two photographs. The scenery is magnificent.
ReplyDeleteThe lake has amazing views. That must have been a great trip.
ReplyDeleteThis is nice.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that America was well represented in the great white north. In the first picture you're wearing a mere T-shirt, demonstrating the fact that we're not exactly wimps down here.
Is it true that when two people meet on the street up there and stop to chat they do jumping jacks throughout the conversation?
