Thanksgiving Tradition remembered again

It was only a few years after our marriage that my young bride, ever the bold one, decided to invite my parents and siblings from the Twin Cities to our rural home in the hinterland for Thanksgiving dinner. Her holiday culinary experience was quite lacking at the time. I must add that back in the day turkeys arrived at the supermarket with their necks still attached and the key organs still to be found inside to add to the stuffing.  While busily peeling potatoes I was asked by the lady in charge "which end do I stuff?" Dumfounded, I discovered there was an opening next to the neck. "Call your best friend Mary Ann" I suggested. And she did. Even standing some distance away I could hear gales of laughter over the telephone.  Thus, a Thanksgiving tradition was born. For decades thereafter the phone  would ring early on Thanksgiving morning with a reminder from Mary Ann as to which end to stuff the Turkey....

  1. Lovely memory. Our friends brought the turkey to dinner years ago, already cooked per time directions. But they had neglected to take out the giblets and neck, hence the bird was more dense than the directions anticipated, so it wasn't done. But we made do. Perfection doesn't make for interesting memories.

  2. I'm guessing nobody forgot the answer to the question after that! It's how we learn---the hard way!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

  3. I have been to a few meals where the 1st time cook didn't find the heart and liver until after cooking. Many put it into the neck. We raised 16 for the holiday and they had waiting pans as fast as we could butcher them.Have a great holiday, I went trout fishing yesterday and froze

  4. You reminded me of the year long ago when my parents decided to go to a farm and bring home a freshly butchered turkey. They had to do all the dirty work and that did not become a tradition! :-)

  10. Good story!
I had a friend who heard you were supposed to put an onion in the stuffing. So she did. But no one told her to chop it up! The stalks of celery stuck out the opening in the bird... well, you get the picture! Ah, she was a fun friend! But we never ate there.

  11. At least she knew to remove the giblets and neck. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  12. LOL. Nowadays, we can simply "google" stuffing a turkey for the answers. So much has changed. But the warmth of family and friends on this holiday remains the same. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

  15. I love this story. I remember my days as a young inexperienced cook doing my first Thanksgiving dinner. It seemed an impossible task but I managed to get through it. Happy Thanksgiving, blogger buddy.
