Big Dog/Big Pony/Bigger Horses

It was late November and the Big Guy and I were hiking a perimeter trail along the eastern edge of Lake Louise State Park. I was hoping to catch sight of an early arriving Northern Shrike. Sure enough....
Baron had stopped along the park fence line noticing something even more interesting out in the nearby pasture. Two horses and pony.I don’t believe he had ever seen such large animals before. Of course, he wanted to investigate. I thought he would surely begin barking. Not a chance. He carefully approached the fence. The horses approached. The pony came right up to the fence. Baron backed away. Then Baron went right up to the fence. ....I scratched the big brown horses ears. Baron watched me and then....

  1. Good thing he didn't try to go around and sniff the OTHER end! That would have hurt. :-)

I read your other blog about the Iron Lady. I had to agree the movie won't win any awards, but I thought it was marvelous because of Meryl.

  8. Isn't it wonderful how animals can get along. Too bad humans can't view differences as interesting.

  9. What a fun find, nice Baron stayed calm to pose with the horses.

  10. Adorable! Don't you just love it when animals get along together? I wish we humans could do more of that. Cute cute!

  11. Baron is a good dog not to bark at those huge horses and pony too. My dogs always barked at my neighbor's horses when they were nearby. Horses can hurt dogs too so I was glad there was a fence between them. Cool cool bird! Lucky you to set out on a mission and actually accomplish it!

  13. I love the encounter. I'll never forget the sight of our dogs when we encountered horses with riders on one of the trails. They sat there totally in awe. Dogs are fun, aren't they?

Hope the Missus is still doing well. We think positive thoughts for her and her great nurse Troutbirder.

  14. The photo of the shrike is gorgeous, and the dog-meets-horse pix are charming. I just read about Mrs. T's surgery. I wish you both all the best as she recuperates.

  15. That last photo is hilarious - Barron's expression is priceless. Scout met her first horses galloping on the beach. She was mighty surprised by the people riding the big dog.

BTW, I got your email but wasn't able to reply to the faulty email link. I'm sorry that you aren't able to comment on my blog anymore. I hope that problem clears up with your server because the embedded comments allow comment replies, a new feature I really like. If lots of people are having this problem I'll go to this pop up box, but no one else has told me. I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me of this problem.

  17. 'Looks like an apprehensive friend was made! Sweet Baron, Pepper Nipper my eight month old Blue Heeler pup would'a been all over the place!!!

    Great pictures sweetie!

God bless and have a glorious day!!! :o)

  18. Your shrike pic is outstanding! Any mice impaled nearby on thorns of fence barbs? What a great gentle dog is Baron. Is that a GPS or shock collar (for an "invisible fence") he's wearing?

  19. Beautiful pic of the shrike, TB. My husband surprised me the other day when he said living here has made him appreciate birdwatching. I never knew it was in him! He's usually more interested in sinkholes and topographic relief.

Baron has definitely matured well. He's become quite the diplomat in foreign (animal) affairs: Hey, stranger. You're way bigger than me. I think I'll be quiet and let you do the talkin'.
