We were just married that summer, almost fifty years ago
now, and had moved into this luxurious rental out in the country. Actually our
new home was composed of several tiny motel cabins pieced together by the
landlord.
With us we bought the first
dog either one of us had ever owned.
His name was Max and we called him The Wonder Dog because we always
wondered what kind of trouble he’d be getting into next. Needless to say neither one of us knew
anything about raising and training a puppy…. And it showed. Still this puppy, what they now call a “designer
dog” and then known as a mutt, half Golden Retriever and half German
Shorthaired Pointer, won over our hearts. Think Marley of book and movie
fame…..And, of course, we had spoiled him rotten.
Max turned out to be the first in a line of excellent pheasant and grouse hunting dogs I owned. Find, point, track, and retrieve, he could do it all and was the very best......:)
Morning, Max was a wonder dog, love them so much. Great place you lived in the country, very nice, Blessings Francine.
ReplyDeleteLove these "look backs". You amd Mrs T always look so happy. What a wonderful life you've had. Glad some dogs got to share it with you!
ReplyDeleteMax looks sooo cute in his jacket.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on almost 50 years of marriage. When is the big day?
ReplyDeleteLove the old photos. Bet you all have always had dogs.. Is there one who won over your heart --more than some others? Dogs have personalities too--so I'm sure that some of them were either more yours or either more your wife's... You should publish a book about your Life with Dogs---and talk about each of them.
Hugs,
Betsy
There is nothing better than owning your first dog. Being a dog lover myself, you just got major AWWWW's from me. :)
ReplyDeleteGood pet and hunter is hard to beat
ReplyDeleteYou certainly brought a smile to this face this morning. The first blog I read and it has a wonderful tale from your life. With all the ugly stuff one can be confronted with on the internet, TV or newspaper, the first thing I read are my friends' blogs about their lives, their families, their animals. Sure beats the Albuquerque Journal with it's latest story about cops who kill mentally ill people.
ReplyDeleteLove the origins of Max's name.
Loved seeing these photos :)
ReplyDeleteHe looks great in a suit too lol
Max kind of looks like my son's first dog, Cappie. Half Lab and half Golden and smart enough to learn almost anything.
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing these pups are in our lives.
Cheers,
Jo
Neat memory, and it's nice to reminded of Marley too.
ReplyDeleteI love the wonder dog. We were like you with our first dog. Fortunately she was smart enough to make a great dog anyway.
ReplyDeleteMan's best friend! I bet he brought you a lot of joy and companionship.
ReplyDeletean absolutely precious, handsome pup! loved this look back!
ReplyDeleteMax was indeed a part of your family and a beautiful lad, indeed!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you had him...and he had you. Beautiful story. Thank you for sharing!
I'm not sure Marley could do any of those things. LOL!
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot dressed up in the jacket!! He sounds like a wonderful dog! Good memories...thanks for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteWell, a great tribute to Max. Somebody must have done some fine training on him to make him a good bird dog. It's always interesting to to see young people on a blog!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful slice of memory.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful look back at a dear family member and friend. I regret I have few photos of the canine companions of childhood and beyond.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really big anniversary is on the horizon. Wow.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat dog and that picture of him blissfully cuddling with Mr. T is adorable.
Sweet memories...Max was a darling!
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet memories of one handsome dog.
ReplyDeleteLovely memories, indeed. Life is really enhanced when there's a dog around.
ReplyDeleteMax in a Jacket is my very favorite! :)
ReplyDeleteWe've never had a hunting dog, and it is talked of often. Our boys all love bird hunting, and Mitch has wanted to get them a good retriever for some time.
We'll see!
Such a sweet post. I loved the picture of Max snuggling in your wife's arms. They do work their way into our hearts, don't they?
