Lily Leads The Way

The first snowfall of the winter had already melted some when Miss Lily and I headed down to Forestville State Park for a hike. We parked by the closed 1898 bridge and walked across the Root River to the small town of Forestville and its post Civil War buildings. Maintained by the Minnesota Historical Society  it comes to life with re-enactors most the year except winter as an adjunct to the State Park.

Looking across the Root we can see the deserted picnic shelter. With miles of trails in the park we're probably alone today as we hike into the woods. There will be several feeder streams along the way. All good trout water.  As a matter of fact this is where I first learned how to cast a fly many years ago now.

After hiking some I find a bench to sit down and rest a minute. Lily hops up along side of me. There are no dangerous critters in these woods but after having this "rescue" dog for less than a year one thing is for sure....... Miss Lily "has my back."

A couple of miles later we easily cross a low Forestville Creek on some concrete slabs. It wouldn't have been a good day to get wet...
"Lets go home Lil. Your Mistress promised us both some treats...:) "

  5. Lily always captures my heart, she is such a good soul. It just exudes from her. How can I fall in love with a dog on the Internet? Crazy, isn't it? :-)

  8. That's a very pleasant place for both people and animals at this time.

  9. I like that. Of course I have a degree of bias having grown up on the prairie a couple hundred miles east of there but it looked very similar. Instead of limestone bluffs there were wooded dunes and streams had made wandering ravines through the sandy soil, but with a few strokes this evokes all that.

There's something quietly majestic about the prairie in winter. It's said Frank Lloyd Wright wandered around out there to get inspiration - he was right between there and where I grew up in Southwest Michigan.

I like this post, though. Limited in words, pictures, colors, subjects, but intellectually very evocative. If I was to lay out my thoughts about how art works this would well illustrate them. There's what you see or hear or read and then there's a corresponding narrative in the unconscious that's stimulated by what you hear and see and read. If I could do it I could leave shorter comments.

  10. There is nothing like a dog for getting us out into the fresh air. I wish I still had mine. The close-up of Miss Lily is lovely, she has such an intelligent face.

  11. Always fun to have a dog for company. I bought mine some jackets and they became toys to pull off each other. I look for the remote this time of year so they can run loose. I just put a line in last week and got my five trout.

  13. Could almost feel the cold. A walk is always more interesting when you have a dog with you to share the sights. How neat she has your back. Shepherds are like that.
