Spring Birding

Indigo Bunting & Northern Oriole.

This spring wasn’t the greatest for outdoor activities. That is to say, it was cold, dark , rainy and often windy. But the backyard birding was great. I have six different feeders scattered throughout the back yard. Here is the view of three of them from my station on the recliner. There you might find me reading, working a crossword, writing something for this blog or peering over the window sill to see if any new feathered friends have arrived for lunch. Take a look.

Of course, there are always the ground feeders like this white crowned sparrow hanging around too. It's quite a show and these pictures show only part of it.

  1. Lovely post and my type of garden, complete with birds. I even have binoculars handy in case a new and rare bird arrives. All I need for peace and quiet and happiness is to get rid of the squirrels.

  3. Hi troutbirder, Neat selection of photos. At first glance it looks like the Hairy Woodpecker has already done some serious work on the log but then I realize it's a feeder. I'll bet you have fun watching all this. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Wow! That's a great display. What do you feed them to attract so many colorful and beautiful birds? I urge your readers to click on the pictures and see them in full size.

When you say "these pictures show only part of it" do you mean there's not a picture of you dozing in the recliner? And by the way, what does your wife feed you to keep you coming around?

  5. I love your birds. Many of them we glimpse only during migration as they head up to visit you for the summer.

  6. Hi TB, I think you have a White-crowned Sparrow there on the ground. Check out
that plain gray band across the back and the crisp black and white stripes that
are so typical of the White-crown. Great angle for a challenging ID. Thanks!

  11. I thought I had replied to this already. But trouble with mobile devices... Anyway, great shots. I know from experience, that getting a good shot of a bird isn't easy, but getting two species in one shot is, well, amazing.
