Winter Visitors

Here are some of the birds that visit southeastern Minnesota in winter. We've had temps in the sixties lately with most of the snow melting.  Tonight the forecast is for a blizzard so winter bird watching isn't over yet.    Photography by my friend and birding mentor Mr. Science (Gary)  Enjoy!

Red Bellied Woodpecker

Mourning Dove

Bald Eagles were not known to winter here forty years ago. Now we have them nesting and staying in our neighborhood....:) The egg laying begins in late February and early March

Pheasants are no longer common here as fence lines and wetlands for habitat are gone.

  3. It's a long time since I saw a Nuthatch, yet we once had them in the garden every day. Lovely pictures of all the birds, favourite one is the Redpoll.

  5. Bird-watching is a grand winter sport isn't it and we can often do it from the warmth of our homes. I have had a lot of the same visit me.

  6. You have a nice variety of birds to brighten up the winter. I got a new one for my life list this week at the beach, a ruddy turnstone. Still in his winter plumage but still exciting for me.

  7. Beautiful photos today. I love nuthatches...their little "peep peep" is so cute. And I like how they move down the trees face-first.

Eagles are becoming a problem in our area and outlying, more rural areas too. If I understand correctly, they hunt for "fun" and don't always eat their prey. They have been decimating chicken farms, leaving dead chickens all over the ground without eating it. In the "city," they are going after little dogs and cats. People are not happy.

  8. Great assortment! We don't have many sparrows, Pine Siskins or Titmouses or Cardinals. They have Cardinals in town along the river. :) I haven't seen a Pheasant in a long time or a grouse:(
