Early Morning Hike

We had headed over to Minneopa State Park for a couple of days camping in early summer. It was a great spot but the results left a little to be desired as it rained for two days steady. On the final day, I didn't hear any rain so Baron and I were up at the crack of dawn for a hike. The roads and trails were deserted so we had it all to ourselves. Take a look.....While the landscape was mostly restored prairie, there were occasional clumps of trees and even a few woods. We followed a trail into one looking for eary morning owls. Instead Baron scurried a family of racoons up a dead tree. If it moves he will chase it.... and no he is not a "coon" dog.

Unlike the "North Shore" along Lake Superior, southern Minnesota isn't noted for waterfalls. Minneopa has one though and with all the rain it was quite impressive.
Not quite sure what this structure was all about. By the time we got back to the campground the sun had come out. It was time for breakfast and then the long ride home .

  2. It is a typical Minnesota day if I remember them. The rain will just stop and the sun comes out and it acts like it never ever rains. The sandy soil dries out quickly. We would have mud for three days.

  3. At least you got in one good walk about before it was time to leave :) Nice shots of the waterfall and what looks to be a stone silo of sorts..interesting no matter what it is.

  5. Never seen raccoons treed like that. Very neat picture. Loved your early morning walk. Hope breakfast was fried trout and eggs. My favorite while camping.

  7. It looks as if you and Baron had quite a nice hike, even if Baron had all the excitement with the raccoon family. The waterfall is very impressive -- and pretty.

  11. LOVE the raccoon family! They're so cute and fascinating to watch, such a pain in the patootsie when they get in your garbage cans.
Thanks for taking us along on yet another lovely exploration!

  12. That is a wind driven grist mill..the stones are fantastic..what a structure!!
I thought that there was supposed to be a double water fall there at the park. (Oh I read Minnesota Conservation Volunteer all the time)
I love Aldo Leopold and his quotes..so I thought that was a wonderful sign too:)

  13. I enjoyed the photos. Must have been fun to see the raccoon family making their way up the tree. Way to go Baron!

Last photo...looks like your better half is doing all the packing up. Baron is relaxing while slurping up some water or food. You were probably inside napping:)
