Baron was my first non-hunting dog and a giant for his
breed. His large size and bone structure led to his demise after seven
wonderful years from elbow dysplasia. He
was my best buddy.
Now Lily, our rescue
GSD, has taken his place and she is a sweetheart for sure. We continue Barons tradition of one or
sometimes even two long hikes per day.
Keeping fit works for all of us.
One of our favorite hiking places is the Goethite WMA. There is a certain routine to this place. A
dog can run free, which is not an option at the State and County Parks and on
the bike trails. Baron would bring me a stick hoping I'll remember he likes to
fetch in the water. So far Lily hasn't shown much interest in that activity.
Then, of course, there are all those interesting smells
along the animal trails.
Baron ran way ahead once following a scent through
the prairie, heading toward the distant mountains. I followed his big ears
bouncing through the tall grass….. Wait a minute! He does have big ears but there
are no mountains in Minnesota’s Bluff Country.
Honest to God. This is what happened. Baron ran ahead out of
sight. When I finally caught up with him, there he was greeting a hiking couple on the
trail . This is exactly what the woman said to me. "We saw him running
towards us through the grass. We thought at first he was a LLAMA. He does have
big ears you know." Good grief !!!
Well, at least, so far, no one has accused Lily of that.....
Was nice to see that pic of you and sweet Baron AKA The Doggy Lama ;) I always loved that pic of you and Baron.
ReplyDeleteNow that's funny! Now that you point it out, they are awfully big ears, like a llama's. :-)
ReplyDeleteLily is a socializer for sure. She sure is a beautiful German Shepard. And she seems in love with your wife. -- barbara
ReplyDeleteoh, that's too funny! goofy!
ReplyDeleteLOL ~ this is so fun. Love it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dogs!
Very cute. I'm glad he has turned out to be a good dog for you.
ReplyDeleteHa! The mountains did stand out to me in that photo.. but the ears had me fooled!
ReplyDeleteI love big eared dogs. :)
Lily is a lot daintier than Baron and both are gorgeous! I'm so glad you have Lily, I know you must really miss Baron.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed before that lady dogs are more sedate in appearance. Seems to be the case when comparing Lily to Baron. Both beautiful dogs.
ReplyDeleteI like that Lily has a central place for her "throne" in your home. She really is a queen.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo of you and Baron. But Lily is gorgeous too!
ReplyDeleteNow that is funny. So glad Lily is fitting in so well.
ReplyDeleteI have always enjoyed that photo of you and Baron. I am certain that Lily takes part of the hurt away, she has a great looking bed! :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dogs, both of them.
ReplyDeleteMine get clear ahead and sometimes if not for the big ears would get lost easy.
ReplyDeleteI think the big ears made Baron look like his name ... very regal !
ReplyDeleteGoodness, he really did have a set didn't he. He was definitely all male where Lily is more the lady. Dog # 2 will never replace #1 but they still claim a special place and help to ease the loss.
ReplyDeleteI like your transition from Baron to the llama -- neat! I think Lily is beautiful, even if she does have 'big' ears.
ReplyDelete:) Too funny!! Glad Lily is enjoying the walks.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny about the llama. What a beautiful dog.
ReplyDeleteAh--how funny... Baron's ears did look similar to a llama's... Who would have 'thunk' it????? ha
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that Lily is different (personality-wise, etc.) from Baron. That's why we humans struggle getting a replacement for a beloved pet... There will never be another Baron. BUT--it seems as if you all are enjoying Lily --and I'm sure she loves being with a loving family.
Hugs,
Betsy
Baron sounds like he was a wonderful dog. It is always interesting how the creatures can be so different. Our smaller dog had siblings that lived around here and each dog had different sized bodies and they all had different personalities. Our dog sounds a lot like Lily who loves people and especially her own family. She is a pretty dog.
ReplyDeleteIt makes my heart happy to see dogs allowed off-leash to explore. Cute story about the hikers. Baron does have some long ears. Handsome dogs!
ReplyDeletePhotos don't lie. Well, at least these certainly didn't. Good memories--both old and more recent.
