Florida Birding - Part One

With the temperature in Minnesota dropping into the subzero range we took the opportunity to head off to Florida for a week of hiking and birding in the sub-tropical sun. I’ll show off a few highlights of our trip…..Upon arrival in our hotel in St. Petersburg, I looked out the second story window of our hotel to see a perfectly tropical scene.

And wouldn't you know it in the courtyard garden below a little blue heron was going about his business.

I quickly ran downstairs to take a picure and then headed across the lawn towards the beach a few steps away.

There I found a Great White Egret and a White Ibis checking out the tennis court, while overhead on the lightpole an Osprey kept watch.

Off to an auspicious birding start we headed back into the hotel for dinner. I had a local craft beer and something called Drunken Coconut Scallops. It was really really good. Tommorow we start taking in area wildlife refuges north of Tampa.....

  8. Oh you are so lucky... So glad you could get away for a week of some SUNSHINE and warmer temperatures...Many people who live in our area --either go to Florida for the winter --or they go north in the Summer... Must be nice to have 2 homes...

    ENJOY

  9. One might think you could organize a cheap bus trip for those of us up here who are totally FED UP with winter in Minniesnowda. Give that some thought, Troutbirder.

  11. This is my last day in the Florida sunshine, with temps in the high seventies yesterday, and birds everywhere. I'm sad to see it go, but I know it will still be here, keeping my sister nice and warm while I mildew back home. :-)

  12. Enjoy!! I'm thoroughly jealous as it's been two years now I've missed a trip to Florida. I'm taking notes of places you find worthy for when I get to go again.

  13. My husband and I are hoping to go to Florida next November or December. We have many friends to visit and perhaps we will do a cruise. These photos encourage me as I really don't know Florida at all and the tropical forest and birds look very attractive. Thanks for sharing your week with the rest of ua sitting in the snowy country.
